Ready, Set, Drive How to Survive Your Commute on Game Day

Ready, Set, Drive How to Survive Your Commute on Game DayReady, Set, Drive How to Survive Your Commute on Game DayFootball season is exciting for fans and players across the country. But for those who live in major football cities that cant get the day off work or who arent fans of the game game day presents a serious dilemma how do I get to work without going crazy when there are thousands of visitors in my town?Game day besucherzahlen is a serious problem for major cities. GPS company TomTom looked at travel data for NFL games in 2010and found that some cities experienced road slowdowns of about 30 percent, with fans in some places driving 50 percent slower than usual. From Texasto Oregon, commuters across the country have their work cut out for them if they want to get to work on time. If you are preparing to commute to work on game day, here are three strategies you can use to avoid the traffic Work from homeThe easiest way to avoid traffic is to work from home. If the majority of your job takes place through computer and email, consider asking for a special dispensation to work from home on game day. If it works out, you might be able to negotiate more time working from homeand get back your time from your commute throughout the year.As for a flexible scheduleIf you need to make it into the office, ask for a flexible schedule for the day to come in later and head home early. This will allow you to avoid the major traffic delays associated with travelers without missing out on important in-office activities.Use technology to your advantageIf you have a smartphone, put it to work Google Maps and Waze both offer traffic alerts in real time and will automatically adjust your travel time so that you have a reliable ETA. You can also set the apps to suggest different routes when the one youre on is congested. Using Waze, passengers in your car can communicate with other cars to find out sudden changes like traffic cops, accidents and shorter routes. Transit is another important app for putting together a reliable travel plan. Unlike the other apps, however, Transit will let you mix and match walking, public transportation and driving to get you to your final destination on time.No matter which strategy you to avoid traffic use, remember to also avoid the spoilers if you cant make it to the game yourself. Steer clear of your favorite sports stations on your commute home so you dont get the results of the game spoiled for you.

4 Ways to Be More Assertive at Work

4 Ways to Be More Assertive at Work4 Ways to Be More Assertive at Work Confidence and assertiveness dont come naturally to everyone, but if you tend to be timid or reserved in work situations, those qualities could end up hurting you. Not only might an excess of mildness give others the opportunity to take advantage of you, but by failing to appear self-assured, you could ruin your chances at getting otherwise well-deserved promotions . Thats why it pays to work on becoming more assertive - and heres how.Being humble generally isnt a bad thing, but when you apologize in workplace situations where an Im sorry is by no means warranted, you discredit your own ideas and highlight your insecurities. Next time you disagree with someone or want to suggest doing things differently, dont preface your statements with Im sorry. Just say what you want to say, let your audience react, and respond as necessary.Imagine your colleague is suggesting a marketing strategy you firmly disagree with. Rather than saying, Im sorry, but I think we should go a different way, try Actually, heres why this other approach will be more beneficial. Your colleagues and managers are more likely to listen to your ideas if your language exudes confidence. You never what know seemingly minor nuances ofspeech can detract from an otherwise compelling argument. Whatever point youre trying to make, youll have a better shot if you stop diminishing your statements with words that make you appear to lack confidence in what youre saying.Imagine you have a great concept to share with your team at your weekly meeting. If you start with something along the lines of This is just an idea, but, youll end up selling that idea short. Rather, get up and say something like My idea is to do so and so. Heres why itll work. Its hard to confidently state your position when your data or knowledge set is fuzzy. So, if youre trying to make a case for something at work, be sure to have all the facts o n hand to back up your claims. While a more naturally assertive person might manage to argue a point forcefully without solid information to sttze it, if youre not the self-assured type, being confident in your research can make a big difference in how convincing you are. So if you expect to be put on the spot at an upcoming meeting , go in prepared. Some people shy away from strong language at work because they fear itll backfire. But the truth is, theres a big difference between being assertive and being aggressive. Whereas the former has a positive connotation, especially at the management level , the latter quality can damage careers. As long as you recognize that and dont cross the line, you have little to lose by being more assertive. In fact, your colleagues might come to respect you more once they see that youre capable of standing your ground. The more confident you appear at work, the more likely you are to succeed. Learning to assert yourself can not only help your career, but make your whole workplace experience more enjoyable.

Ask questions.Your questions should let the employer know that youve given meaningful thought to the position while also showcasing something thats important to you.You could ask the employer what the biggest challenges of the moment are, and that would be okay. But take it a step further by asking What are the biggest challenges for the department currently and how will those role solve for them?Obviously, if this was something covered in the interview, you wont ask it later or else it will l ook like you werent paying attention, but you get the idea.Remember that its a conversationWe know that going on an interview for a job you really want or need can be nerve-racking, but just try to remember that an interview is really just a conversation. It may be a more formal conversation than youd have with your buds, but its a conversation nonetheless.Keeping that in mind will help ease your nerves so that you can put your best foot forward and land the job. And remember that many hiring managers arent looking for perfect answers. Theyre looking for indications about how you behave under pressure and the way you approach the interview will tell them a lot.Bringing it togetherTheres not a one-size-fits all approach to going on a job interview, but there are several elements that every employer is going to be looking for.No matter how well you prepare for an interview, we all need a little help sometimes.Contact us today if you want one-on-one advice or feedback on your resume, y our LinkedIn profile, or if you want to be connected with a career coach.

When and How to Disclose Your Salary Requirements

When and How to Disclose Your Salary Requirements When and How to Disclose Your Salary Requirements Some job postings ask you to include a dollar amount that you expect to earn as a salary, or they may even ask you to include your salary history when you apply for the position. You may not feel comfortable about this, so how do you know when and how to disclose your salary requirements when you apply for jobs? Why Companies Want Your Salary Information Companies request salary information for various reasons. If your salary requirement (or salary history) is too high, employers can screen you out because they dont want to pay that much, or because they think you wont be happy working for less money. On the other hand, if your salary requirement (or your salary history) is lower than the company is willing to pay, they may offer you a lower salary than another candidate. In order to avoid being screened out or offered a low salary, you need to be careful how you describe your salary information Read below for tips on how to provide this information without hurting your chances of getting a job, while still receiving a fair salary. What Salary Requirements Are A salary requirement is the amount of compensation a person needs to accept a position. Salary requirements are based on several factors such as: The industryPrior salary historyPrevious work experienceCost of living Occasionally, an employer might ask you to include your  salary history  instead of (or along with) your salary requirements. A salary history is a document that lists your past earnings. The document typically includes the name of each company you worked for, your job title, salary, and benefits package. Is it Legal for an Employer to Ask for Your Salary Requirements? Employers can legally ask you to state your salary requirements. However, some states and cities restrict employers from requesting information about your past salary. Check with the  state Department of Labor  in your jurisdiction for the latest information on this issue as well as the laws that apply in your city and state. Salary Requirements: Include or Leave Out? If the job listing doesnt mention it, dont offer any salary information at all. Ideally, you want the prospective employer to bring up the topic of compensation first. If you’re asked to include salary requirements with your application, you could ignore the request, but that means you risk not getting  an interview.  There are nothing employers like less than when candidates do not follow directions. It’s best to follow instructions. However, there are a few ways you can provide the required information while limiting your risk of being screened out or offered a low salary. Tips for Including Salary Requirements When asked to include salary requirements, you can include  a salary range  rather than a specific amount. This kind of answer gives you some flexibility and prevents you from locking yourself into a low salary (or being screened out for having too high of a salary). This range should be based  on the salary research  youve done. For example, you can state in your cover letter, “My salary requirement is in the $35,000 to $45,000 range.”  When stating a  salary range, make sure that the range is realistic: Use salary surveys  to determine the  average salary  for the position you are interviewing for, or for a similar position if you cant find information on the exact job title.Use  salary calculators  to factor in cost-of-living expenses and to estimate what you should be paid in a particular location. There are a variety of  salary surveys and calculators, including industry-specific and geographic resources, available online. Another option is to state that your salary requirements are negotiable based on the position and the overall compensation package,  including benefits. Either way, note that your salary requirements are flexible. That may help keep you in the running for the position and will give you some flexibility when  negotiating compensation  later on if you get  a job offer. Tips for Including Salary History If you’re asked to include your salary history, you can also list your previous salaries as ranges rather than specific amounts. But again, always follow any specific instructions about how to include salary history. If the employer gives specific instructions on how to include salary requirements, follow those rules. For example, if he or she says to give a specific dollar amount (rather than a range), do so. No matter how you include your salary history, always be honest. Its easy for potential employers to check your  salary with previous employers. Any false information will get you screened out of the application process. Where and How to Include Salary Information Salary requirements can be included in your cover letter with sentences such as My salary requirement is negotiable based upon the job responsibilities and the  total compensation package, or My salary requirement is in the $25,000 to $35,000 range. Keep your reference to salary requirements brief, so the employer can focus on the rest of your cover letter. If the employer asks you to include your salary requirement in a different way (for example, in your resume), be sure to do so. There are a few ways you can include your salary history. First, you can include the history in your cover letter, briefly stating what you earn now. For example, you might say, “I currently earn in the mid-40s.” You can also include an itemized list of your previous salaries (or salary ranges), either in your resume or on a separate  salary history page  that you enclose with your resume and cover letter.

On the other hand, HR involves a lot of paperwork that must be filed systemically such as employee profile and legal documents. With all the processes and administrative tasks involved, keeping organized will help increase your efficiency as an HR manager, being able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Decision-making skills. There is a lot of decision making involved in HR. One good example is during the recruitment process where they have to decide whether an applicant is the right fit for the role or not. Recognizing good talent is not something you can easily learn. It requires strategy, experience and intuition. This is something an HR manager must have. Another instance is when facing the dilemma of downsizing. It will be part of HR's role to get the message across efficiently even in the midst of a crisis. As such, all HR managers must be sound decision makers to support critical organizational functions like these. Training and developmental Skills. Another function of human resource is training and development. HR managers are responsible for giving employees development opportunities in order to maximize performance and increase value. Organizing sessions on leadership and management training, for example, will provide more diverse skills to the employees. This allows them to assume added tasks and support their career growth at the same time. Budgeting skills. Compensations and benefits all go through HR. The same goes with training and development, social activities, performance appraisals, etc. These activities have to be incorporated into their organization's strategic planning and budgeting, taking into account each department's projects and their individual functions. The primary role of the HR manager is to limit expenditures and not overspend on unnecessary activities. Empathetic skills. The HR team deals with a lot of people and their concerns, from workload to salary complaints to a conflict in the workplace. As a manager of human resource, you need empathetic skills to ensure you understand where the person is coming from before you make any judgment. It could be that the employee just needs to get something off his chest and only needs a listening ear. Or he might be airing his grievances so he can get help. Whatever the case, it is the HR manager's responsibility to listen to the employees and ensure they got their message across clearly. HR is a terrific field with a lot of opportunities. But, you have to have the proper skills to succeed as an HR manager. If you're a real people person, this just might be the career for you! How to Become a Crime Scene Investigator

How to Become a Crime Scene Investigator How to Become a Crime Scene Investigator In any criminal case, the most important part of a  successful prosecution is the evidence presented.  Witness testimonies are great, well-written reports are a must, and the ability to use investigative skills to piece together the puzzle and solve the crime is vital.   No matter how skilled a detective or investigator is in making the case, though, shes ultimately only as good as the evidence she can collect.  If youve got an eye for detail and want to be the difference-maker in criminal cases, youll want to know how to become a crime scene investigator.   Crime scene investigators collect and gather evidence at crime scenes. Theyre responsible for preserving the evidence and transporting it to the laboratory for analysis or the evidence locker for safekeeping.   They may also provide laboratory assistance and analysis, depending on their role in their  employing agency.  They work in the field and respond to  crime scenes that may range from mundane to gruesome, and are subject to call out at any time.   Crime scene investigation is a fascinating career, but it is certainly not for the faint of heart.  CSIs can expect to deal with all manner of bodily fluids and biological substances, including blood, saliva, feces, and even semen.  A strong stomach is a must. Before you get too excited, realize that working as a crime scene investigator isnt quite like what you see on TV in shows like CSI.  Its nowhere near as dramatic or glamorous, and while crimes seem to get solved in an hour on television, the truth is they often take days, weeks or even months to get all of the evidence gathered and analyzed to prepare a warrant for arrest, much less get a conviction. There is a growing interest in all sorts of careers in forensic science, but the magic of television and movies have led to particularly increased attention and popularity of CSI careers, especially civilian careers in criminal justice and criminology. What that means for anyone who wants to work as a crime scene tech is that youll need to do your part to make yourself stand out when you hit the job market. Requirements for Crime Scene Investigators Most criminal justice agencies use sworn crime scene investigators, meaning that in many cases youll need to become a police officer before you can work as a CSI.  Generally, the minimum qualifications to become a police offer require you to: Be a U.S. CitizenHold a valid driver licenseBe at least 19 years old, and often 21 years or olderHave no prior convictions or arrests for felonies, domestic violence or serious misdemeanorsHave a high school diploma or GEDHave a minimum of two years public contact work experience, prior law enforcement service or military service Keep in mind that these are the minimum requirements for work as a police officer; just meeting these will not guarantee employment in law enforcement, much less work as a crime scene investigator, but if you dont  at least meet these, you wont have a shot at getting hired. Civilian crime scene investigators must meet similar qualifications; however, the job market is even tougher, so there will be a greater emphasis on education and experience than there may be for their sworn CSI counterparts. Landing a job as a crime scene investigator takes training, practice, and experience.  As law enforcement specialty positions, candidates will usually need to work the streets as a patrol officer for a year or more before they can be considered for transfer to a special detail or job.   During that time, youll want to hone the skills you learned in the police academy, particularly those that relate to criminal investigations such as lifting fingerprints, identifying and documenting evidence, and diagraming crime scenes. For non-sworn positions, you can gain experience through internships and forensic  science and crime scene investigation certificate programs.  Youll also very likely spend time apprenticing with an experienced investigator at the start to get valuable on-the-job training. A Sparse Career Field Crime scene investigators work on the front lines of forensic science to gather and collect evidence from crimes.  While a lot of people tend to focus their studies on criminal justice, criminology or a generalized forensic science degree, the truth is that the emphasis in forensic science should be on the science, not the forensics. While a degree is not necessarily required for CSI careers, you cant underestimate the benefits of a college education.  If youre really interested in working as a crime scene investigator, youll need to have a solid background in the sciences to understand the science behind evidence collection and to have a better understanding of where to find evidence, what to collect and how to analyze it.   A degree in any of the natural sciences, such as physics, biology or chemistry will give you the foundational knowledge youll need to get started. With a major in natural science, youll also want to get a background in the criminal justice process, as well as knowledge of how and why crime is committed and how it is investigated.   Take courses in criminal justice, criminology and forensics, and consider minoring or earning a double major in one of these  fields.  By doing so, youll develop the keen scientific mind and the knack for criminalistics youll  need for a successful crime scene investigator career. Skills Youll Need to Succeed Crime scene investigators need to be, in a sense, a jack of all trades.  You need a range of skills to be an effective CSI, including photography, computer skills, and a detail-oriented mind.   Since youll be working closely with detectives and investigators, youll also need strong communication skills and the ability to speak and write clearly.  You can also expect to be called to give courtroom testimony, so youll need to be able to answer questions clearly and concisely and be able to curb your nerves. Background Investigations for Crime Scene Investigators Whether or not crime scene investigators are sworn police officers, they will be dealing with sensitive information and working closely with law enforcement officers.  Evidence collection and preservation is an incredibly important job that requires a high level of trust.   In light of this fact, a thorough background investigation will be required that will include looking into your previous employment  and any criminal history you may have  and may include a polygraph exam, a psychological evaluation, and a physical fitness assessment.   Training for Crime Scene Investigators ?Depending on the state, jurisdiction or even agency that you want to work for, you may need to attend a crime scene investigation academy or receive specialized training in evidence collection and preservation. Or, you may simply receive on-the-job training as you apprentice with other experienced investigators. For holding any sworn  positions, youll need to attend a police academy and take and pass a state certification exam.  In the academy, youll learn about various crimes, what sort of evidence to look for and how to properly identify, document and collect it. Becoming a Crime Scene Investigator With the increased interest in all forensic careers, becoming a crime scene investigator is not an easy prospect.  Youll face competition in the job market, and youll need to be patient as you work toward your goals, especially if you have to become a police officer first.   For those with an analytical mind and a knack for fine detail, working as a crime scene investigator is an excellent opportunity to apply your skills and interests in an interesting and exciting criminology career.

This is how to get in the habit of writing everyday

This is how to get in the habit of writing everyday This is how to get in the habit of writing everyday The habit consists of the cue, routine and reward. If you have a highly structured life, it’s relatively easy to develop even such a monster discipline like a writing habit.Stephen King, for example, wakes up, drinks a coffee and sits at his writing desk, the same desk in his home office with the same computer and so on. He writes for a few or several hours. It’s hammered into his persona. He hardly can resist writing when he goes through the motion of his morning ritual and finishes at his desk.Unfortunately, not many people have highly structured lives nowadays.Take me, for example. I work hectic hours, usually 9 to 5, but sometimes some overtime, sometimes there is nightly work, because servers and systems can be put on maintenance only at night, and sometimes I work on weekends, at a client’s site, or from home.Plus I commute to the office 2-3 hours a day (and that’s an improvement after my previous job where it was 4 hours!), have a family of five, church community meeti ngs, and, well, life.A habit involving the same place and circumstances is all but impossible in my case. I write most of my content (about 40%) on trains to/from work, but I also work at stations waiting for trains, at home and at work.Sometimes I work early in the morning, sometimes late at night. Sometimes in a single session, sometimes in 5-minute chunks. Two things that helped me most with developing writing habit (I’ve written every day since September 26, 2013) were my writer’s identity and a writing log.Once you have the writer’s identity, a writing habit is not so difficult to developWriters write. You expect from yourself to produce written content. You are disappointed with yourself if you don’t. You are content when you do. I feel uneasy if I haven’t written on any particular day. Today I slept only four hours (overtime at night), I napped on a train to work instead of writing. The day at the office was crazy busy with the coming implementation of a client syste m’s new version, so I couldn’t smuggle even 5 minutes of writing. However, at 2 pm I had enough. I felt smashed because I haven’t written a single day today! I took a 27 minute break and wrote a Quora answer just to regain the focus on my job. That’s the power of a writer’s identity.A writing log is a tool I use to track every single word I produce with the intent of publishing it somedayIt’s an Excel sheet where I track the start and stop time of my every writing session, number of words, type of content and the place I’m writing in.I’ve got this idea from my mentor, Steve Scott. He recommended it as a tool for developing a writing habit. You can also track different metrics, like your mood, for example. The goal of a writing log is to provide you with tangible data about your work output. By tracking your writing, you can conclude where and when your writing is the most productive or what type of writing comes easy for you. With my hectic schedule, I found a writing l og to be a handy tool for sticking with a writing habit.Writing, especially for one hour a day, especially in different places and at various times of the day, is difficult to habitualize. Opening my writing log, preparing the entry before I start, and then filling the entry at the end serves me as the cue and reward for this habit. Those manual activities are something the reptile part of my brain (where the habits are stored) understands and can save for future reference. In other words, once I open the log and note down the date, the topic and the language in which I write, it’s almost impossible for me not to write. And the data I gathered is awesome. I can easily find out how many words I have written in any given month or day for the last 2.5 years. I have tangible proof that my writing speed increased more than 70% since I started my log.I discovered that I write with the same speed in English and in Polish. I’m a numbers freak; I love this stuff.Embrace your writer’s iden tity. Keep a writing log. Your writing habit will appear almost on its own. This article was originally published on Quora.com.   Michal Stawicki is  a coach  and self-published author writing about how to ‘expand beyond your limits’ so you can regain control over your life (based on my personal experience).

9 Android Apps for Engineers

9 Android Apps for Engineers 9 Android Apps for Engineers With technology constantly changing, many people have grown a little more than attached to their mobile devices. In an age when smart phones and tablets have become the one-stop-shop for communication and entertainment, people are also increasingly using them to accomplish work-related tasks with a simple swipe of the finger. As the smartphone and tablet market continues to experience growth, apps also are on the rise. A few years ago, smart phone users were downloading more apps on the iPhone than on Android. The scale seems to be tipping now and as reported by Canalys, just over half of all apps downloaded in the first quarter of this year were for Android. The Axon Calc app offers heat transfer calculators for engineers. Image: Axon Calc The market has changed significantly, says Shuchi Khurana, founder and CEO of Axon Calc, a company that develops mobile calculator apps for science and engineering. When I started the company in 2010, there were fewer apps, but now there are lots of calculation, reference, and unit conversion apps on Google Play, he adds. In Khuranas opinion, The natural progression for apps would be mix of information with calculation and apps becoming smarter by doing complex calculations being able to solve problems with default input and flexibility to add. He envisions a social component where sharing will grow and engineers give feedback to each other. Regardless of the platform, the multitudes of apps being added to the App Store and Google Play every day are enabling engineers to perform simple and repetitive tasks while on the road. Here are nine useful Android apps that can be handy for mechanical engineering professionals and students. EngCalc includes formulae and property tables for mechanical, hydraulic, structural, machine design, electrical, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics, HVAC, pipe flow, and automotive. It also integrates a unit convertor with units and conversions. Also for you: Five Mobile Apps for Engineers The CAD View 3D MFC enables the user to rotate 3-D renderings with the touch of a finger. Image: CAD View 3D MFC Heat Transfer Calculator offers calculators related to heat transfer calculations. The calculators include a conduction and convection calculator which calculates the conduction and convection phenomenon and outputs the temperature or heat transfer rate. It also allows unit conversion of heat transfer-related units from Metric to English units. Engineering Unit Converter is an engineering unit converter that allows engineers to choose a category such as length, energy, entropy, electric charge, etc., from a list. The available units appear in two spinning wheels and you can change the input value in the yellow field, sort units, or use the swap button. Fluid Mechanics Converter is a conversion calculator that can translate different units of measure related to fluid mechanics. The app includes a fluid converter, flow rate (mass) converter, flow rate (volume) converter, viscosity (dynamic) converter, viscosity (oil and water) converter, and a viscosity (kinematic) converter. Engineers are able to simulate design options during the concept phase using Autodesks ForceEffect Motion app. Image: Autodesk Engineering Cookbook is a reference guide for mechanical designers. It provides access to frequently needed information, including heating and cooling load estimating; sound and vibration guidelines, ventilation rates for indoor air quality; and design formulas and conversion factors. Mechanical Engineering 101 is an on-the-go learning app that helps you to understand the basics of Mechanical Engineering 101. The app provides bite-sized learning through tutorials, quizzes, and flashcards. Mechanical Engineering Magazine is the monthly flagship publication of ASME. The app delivers an interdisciplinary view of engineering trends, giving readers a roadmap to understand todays technology and tomorrows innovations. CAD View 3D MFC is a 3-D data file viewer designed for CAD users. It supports the most popular 3-D CAD formats including STL, DXF, and JT. With help of this app, users can take their 3-D files with them no matter where they are and view them with their phone (or tablet) directly. The app provides 3-D features including rotating model with finger movement, changing object material color or rendering background color, and changing rendering light intensity. Autodesk ForceEffect Motion app allows engineers to develop functional moving mechanical systems right on their mobile devices. Unlike the traditional approach of using paper, pencil, and a calculator to develop equations for design options, the app does all the simulation and engineering calculations on mobile device, enabling engineers to simulate design options during the concept phase to determine the viability of a design. Recovery Tips When a Job Interview Gets Awkward

Recovery Tips When a Job Interview Gets Awkward Recovery Tips When a Job Interview Gets Awkward Whether you’re just starting out in your career or a well-seasoned veteran of the job-search game, you probably have an idea of how the ideal job interview is “supposed” to go.  You walk in the room, give a firm handshake, and proceed to answer questions you’re well-prepared for, just like the rockstar candidate you envision yourself to be.   Before you give yourself a hypothetical pat on the back, however, you should also know that it’s entirely possible for an interview to go horribly, awfully, awkwardly wrong, many times through no fault of your own.  Preparation, though, is the key to success.  Instead of running home and crying into a bowl of ice cream over an interview gone bad, take a few minutes to read along as we help you prep for the worst case scenario and show that you can master whatever the job search throws at you. What’s in a Name Forgetting the name of your dinner companion on that all-important first date is awkward enough.  Now imagine raising the stakes and completely blanking on the identity of your interviewer, mid career-making interview.  In either situation, your conversation counterparty will appreciate and respect a personal address.  If you’ve got rico-suave level skills, you can probably get by with a pet name or two for personal interactions, but using the tagline of “honey” or “gorgeous” with a prospective employer probably isn’t going to get you very far.  On the other hand, calling someone by the wrong name can make you seem forgetful at best and straight out inattentive at worst.  Neither quality is going to score you many bonus points towards that offer or call back. All that being said, there are solid approaches to help avoid lapses in salutations.  Before your interview, ask for the names of the various individuals you’ll be meeting with.  Study these and even try writing them down a few times to commit the titles to memory.  Similarly, practice reciting the names to yourself in realistic scenarios.  Simple statements like “thank you, Mr. Smith,” or “Mrs. Jones, I appreciated your time,” will help prepare you for the interview while also familiarizing yourself to your interviewers’ identities. When all else fails, ask for a business card or contact info towards the end of your interview.  This will be a helpful cheat sheet for both social niceties on your way out and for those all-important follow up thank you emails. Hearing Crickets Another surefire cringe-worthy moment for any conversation setting is the awkward pause.  You know the scenario we’re talking about here.  Conversation is going well, perhaps stilted, but at least you’re forming syllables and vowels into some form of a coherent sentence.  Then, all of a sudden, either yourself or the interviewer will make an open-ended statement.  Maybe you’re not sure whether something was a question or a declaration.  Maybe they don’t know how to reply to your unexpected answer.  Whatever the case, few things can blast a hole through your interview confidence like an awkward pause in the conversation. If this is the stuff that gives you nightmares, never fear.  There are a few easy and productive ways to handle a break in conversation.  To get things back on track, when the conversation breaks, try asking the interviewer if your answer made sense, or if they felt you’d fully answered their question.  Whatever their reply, talking will commence and you’ll both have an opening to get out of a stagnant pause.  If you’re the one who is blanking, try asking the interviewer to repeat or rephrase the question, giving yourself time to collect thoughts and formulate a stellar reply. The Unpredictable No matter how much you prep for your all-important job interview, it’s inevitable that there will be questions or scenarios that catch you unaware.  From your interviewer pausing to take a personal call to a fire alarm or drill, unexpected events can put a damper on your otherwise impeccably planned interview style.  For the unwary, this can lead to flubbed answers or an overall poor performance. The best way to deal with the awkward or unexpected moments during an interview is typically with humor.  The ability to go with the flow, take a few unexpected punches, and continue to shine demonstrates adaptability that is often highly desirable for an employer.  Showcase your flexibility by laughing off surprises and picking right back up where the interview left off.  In the real world, this is a much more accurate depiction of what it means to work in a high pressure, ever-changing company and you’ll score big bonus points.  As a plus, these events can often make you more memorable to an interviewer or potential employer, lessening the likelihood that your candidacy will get lost in the crowd.   While we all strive for structure and perfection in our interview, from time to time things are going to get a bit awkward.  For individual candidates, the way you address these pressures will speak volumes about your potential skill set in a position and handling these situations well will increase your chances of landing a gig exponentially.  Have a horror story or other tip?  Feel free to drop us a line so that we can share with fellow job seekers who may end up where you’ve been at some point in their job-seeking future.

How to Get Back to a Teaching Career After a Break

How to Get Back to a Teaching Career After a Break How to Get Back to a Teaching Career After a Break Whether you left the profession to care for your children or took a break to pursue other career options, returning to teaching can be more challenging than going back to work in other fields. How hard is it to go back to work? A lot depends on where you were when you left, and what you’ve done since then. Depending on where you’re teaching and what kind of teaching job you’re looking for, you may need to update your certification or learn new skills. Make a Plan for Your Post-Break Return The first thing to decide when you return to teaching is where you want to teach. If you’re targeting a private school instead of a public school, for example, you might find that you have less work to do in terms of updating your certifications. There are, of course, pros and cons to teaching in both settings. Public schools tend to pay more, but teachers we spoke with said that private schools may be less likely to require “teaching to the test” in the age of Common Core. In any case, it’s essential to know what employers will be looking for, before you start job searching, and make a plan to upskill yourself as required. Update Your Teaching Certifications and Skills Depending on your state and prospective employer â€" and whether you let prior teaching certification lapse â€" you may need to re-certify in order to return to the classroom. Your State Department of Education can tell you the requirements for teachers in your area. To find yours, see the U.S. Department of Education website.  Look beyond state requirements when updating your resume and consider the skills you need, and what prospective employers want. For example, you may be required to get CPR or first aid training or an updated TB test. Be Ready for Things to Be Very Different “One of the biggest challenges was having to adjust my expectations,” said one pre-K readiness teacher in North Carolina, who returned to teaching after 20 years as a stay-at-home mom and consultant. “Children are very different today than they were in 1988 when I first started teaching. There are quite a few little humans out there who now seem to be in charge of their household, and the parents seem to accept and encourage this. Screen time and the apparent lack of parental interaction with their children also is a huge concern.” Be prepared for new technology, both in terms of what you’ll use to engage with your students … and what will keep your students from engaging with you. What kind of technology are we talking about? Everything from white noise to help students concentrate, to digital worksheets and video tutorials. Be prepared to answer interview questions about the current use of technology in the classroom, your classroom management style, and other typical teacher interview questions. And, of course, you should be prepared to set some ground rules about phone/tablet use in the classroom. Look at Your Own Social Media Returning teachers must be prepared to start over in terms of building a reputation within the school community. That means, in part, making sure there’s nothing on their social media that would give anyone pause, meaning students, parents, colleagues, and administrators. Posts that might seem innocent â€" a picture of you enjoying an after-work glass of wine with friends, a strongly worded but otherwise PG political view or personal opinion â€" can get you fired or dropped from contention for jobs. Best practice is to maintain separate professional or personal accounts or lock down your social media altogether. Getting Back Into Teaching Work When it comes time to start looking for jobs, substitute teaching can offer a way to transition back into the classroom, offering returning teachers a way to gain recent experience and thus overcome resume gaps that might give employers pause. “I think subbing is one of the best and easiest ways to get back into teaching, and helps the school staff become familiar with your work before you apply for a position,” said the pre-K readiness teacher, who currently works at the private preschool that her children attended, and where she once worked as a sub. Not sure where to find substitute teaching work? Your professional network can help. Look for connections as close to home, whether it’s through your prior employer or your children’s school, and ask your contacts for leads.   Other options including picking up some online gigs to get started, or jumping right back into the workforce and starting a search for a full-time teaching job, once youve updated your credentials, planned your return to work and prepared for a successful job search.
